What is fotoFRIDAY?
fotoFRIDAY, originally began on <a href="www.poetry.tetto.orgPoetryCritical by a fellow named onkelcripsy, is a weekly photo-based writing prompt. Recently revived at PoetryCritical, secondmagpie thought it would be a fantastic idea to carry the concept over to dA and expand it to include poetry and prose.
The concept is simple: write a poem or story inspired by the week's picture. There are no line requirements, and the author can choose to be as literal or figurative with his/her interpretation as s/he'd like. New "prompts" come out every Friday, and participants have until the following Wednesday to post a link to the scrap or deviation the photograph inspired. News articles featuring the photographs and the submissions are released at the earliest convenience, and there is even the occasional contest (with prizes)!
In 2006, fotoFriday earned secondmagpie an award as a senior dA staff member for "bringing together visual artists and writers by inspiring art with art". It has been applauded and honored by senior members and gallery directors throughout the dA community and continues to inspire countless artists on dA and beyond. In January 2007 alienhead even published a short novel, A Life Transparent, originally conceived from a fotoFriday prompt.
Note: fotoFRIDAY is under the temporary management of GeneratingHype.
How do I join?
Since fotoFRIDAY is a project and not a club, all that we ask is that you the account. You do not have to submit any writing if you don't want to, and you are free to submit one week and not submit another. Consider this a weekly dose of inspiration; if you're inspired, then write and let us know; if you're not, wait until the following week and see if something hits you. At the very least we can promise you a new and exciting photograph every week or so!
Okay, I wrote something. Now what?
Now all you have to do is copy the url (www.deviantart.com/deviation/#) and paste it a comment to the weekly journal. Please do not note your submissions to the account or post them on our front page, as we might miss them!
Are there prizes? What's the point?
There are no prizes for our weekly prompts other than the feel-good feeling you get when you complete a piece of writing. fotoFRIDAY does run contests occasionally, but we'll let you know when they occur and what the prizes are at that time.
So the point? Oh yeah: the point is to be inspired! Break out of that writer's block, look at things from a new angle, go back to an old piece you've given up on--quite simply: write.
I'm a photographer. How do I get featured?
The first step is to send a NOTE to the fotoFRIDAY account letting us know that we have permission to use one of your photographs (please specifiy which) or any photograph in your gallery for one of our prompts. We'll then add you to the list and, if your photograph is chosen, we will note you the week it comes out.
Please understand that granting permission to fotoFRIDAY does not gaurantee that your photograph will be chosen for a prompt.
If you know any photographers here on dA that you think might like to contribute their work, have them send me a note-- or, on the other hand, if you find stock photos (or you yourself have photos) feel free to note me with any suggestions.

fotoFRIDAY LXXXV: Too Many Roman Numerals
Too Many Roman Numerals
What am I talking about? No one can possibly have enough roman numerals! :P
A few notes before we hop into this week's prompt. First, I'd like to take a moment to remind our writers that when uploading your writing to dA (or anywhere else!) you cannot use the photograph as a thumbnail without the permission of the photographer. If you've uploaded a photograph without permission, please contact the photographer or pull down the thumbnail. It's okay to post a piece of writing without a thumbnail, too!
We've been off to a slow start this month, but there's been plenty of good writing to go around, as you can see on the
fotoFRIDAY LXXXIV: Accidents
Happy Accidents
It's a bird! It's a plane! No wait, it's FRIDAY! :excited:
Last week's fotoFRIDAY started us off on the right foot (pun intended, forgive me); we had a few fantastic entries which will be highlighted in our bi-weekly newsletter -- keep an eye out for it this Thursday! There was some great writing in there.
Sometimes our best work is the writing we didn't look to create with a specific purpose in mind. This week's featured photographer, the lovely Mollinda (https://www.deviantart.com/mollinda), explains that she "likes the accidents more than the intended most of the time" and a lot of writers find that true of their own art as well. So let's see what
fotoFRIDAY LXXXIII: Stepping Forward
Welcome back to fotoFRIDAY (https://www.deviantart.com/fotofriday), ladies and gents. :salute:
Over the past years, we've been blessed with photographers who have been willing to give us their art in order to inspire our own. When restarting this project, we were once again blessed with a group of fantastic volunteers and seniors who offered their work to us, including this week's featured piece by FixMeKnow (https://www.deviantart.com/fixmeknow) (who is a long-time favorite photographer of mine, but shhh!). Get ready for some exciting weeks of photography from deviantART's finest! And don't forget -- your own or favorite photography can be featured too! Just note or email us with any suggestions and we'll be
We're now a group!
Thanks to the lovely Community Relations team for giving us the opportunity to convert to a group!
As you can see by our fancy countdown, fotoFRIDAY is coming back for its grand return on Friday the 13th (oooh, spooky). Memberships are open and we encourage you to join up and participate! I am also very pleased to announce that RetroZombie (https://www.deviantart.com/retrozombie) will be helping manage fotoFRIDAY as our photography manager! :excited: Both of us happen to be taking a wee bit of a summer vacation, but once we're back, we'll be ready to take your suggestions and get writing with all of you again!
In the meantime: if you're interested in helping fotoFRIDA
